About Exscite

The Pedal Go in actionExscite's mission is to promote and popularise science and technology to members of the general public through the use of interactive exhibitions and exciting and constantly changing education programmes. 'Exscite' stands for Explorations in Science and Technology.

Exscite first opened in February 1992 as an eight-month temporary exhibition in the Waikato Museum. It proved so popular there, that it then moved to Collingwood Court where it opened again in June 1993 and ran till December 1994.

Substantial capital funding was then sought, largely from the Lottery Grants Board and a new building was constructed on its present site, next to the Museum, during 1995. The centre then opened to the public on the new site in January 1996. Funding to run the centre from July 1997 to June 2000 came from three sources: income from Exscite's admission charges, and financial contributions from both the WEL Energy Trust and the Hamilton City Council.

Since July 2000 the Hamilton City Council has assumed responsibility for operation of Exscite. Exscite continues to be guided by the Exscite Trust (a charitable organisation) to ensure that the centre carries out the Mission of the Trust in all of its activities.
